VAT Calculator - Convert Between Net, Tax, and Gross
Enter any one of the net amount, VAT, or total and the other two are filled in instantly. The rate is adjustable, so backing out the net from a tax-inclusive total is just as easy.
Why VAT trips people up so often
Whenever an invoice or quote gets written, someone ends up asking whether the amount is tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive. Backing the net amount out of a tax-inclusive total means dividing by 1 plus the rate, and the moment the rate changes, so does the formula. This calculator takes care of all of that as soon as you type a single number.
Enter the net amount to get the VAT and total, or type the total a client gave you to reverse out the net and the VAT. The rate is freely adjustable, so it works for any percentage.
How to use it
- Check the rate. It defaults to 10%.
- Type the value you know into any one of the three fields.
- The other two fields fill in automatically.
Good times to use it
- Splitting the net and VAT on a tax invoice
- Figuring the tax-inclusive total for a quote
- Backing the net amount out of a tax-inclusive price
- Calculating under different rates across countries
Frequently asked questions
Divide the total by (1 + rate/100). At a 10% rate that means dividing by 1.1. This calculator does it automatically as soon as you type a value into the Total field.
Enter the percentage in the Rate (%) field at the top. The default is 10, and you can type any number, including decimals, for other countries or special rates.
Yes. Type the value you know into any of the three fields and the other two are computed automatically. The field you last edited is used as the basis.
Results are rounded to the nearest whole unit for display. In practice, the rounding of sub-unit amounts on invoices can follow local tax rules, so keep that in mind when issuing official documents.
Yes. Enter the VAT or sales tax rate for the country in the rate field. It handles Japanese consumption tax, European VAT, and many other rates.
